Three-Tier Architecture  top

With most accounting systems, virtually all processing is done inefficiently on the client workstation. While tasks, such as reports or posts, are running on the user workstation, the user is unable to use the workstation until the task completes processing, which severely limits user productivity.

The innovative three-tier client/server architecture in Platinum for Windows optimizes the balance of processing between the client workstations, file server, and one or more application servers. Tasks, such as posts, listings, utilities, and reports are run on one or more application servers instead of on each user's workstation. This way, users are empowered to accomplish other productive work on their workstation while tasks are being processed by an application server.

Optimum Performance and Scalability  top

The three-tier client/server architecture provides optimum system performance and scalability. As your business grows and processing requirements increase, you can simply upgrade the Application Servers to faster machines, or add additional Application Servers.

Flexible System Configuration  top

The implementation of Application Servers provides maximum flexibility of system configuration to match your resources and processing requirements. If desired, Application Servers can be dedicated to perform certain tasks. For example, a customer might define an Application Server dedicated to processing reports and a second Application Server reserved for posts. You have complete flexibility to configure Application Servers in the manner that best fits your business requirements.

To minimize cost, Application Servers don't have to be expensive state-of-the-art machines. An Intel '386 processor is all that is required. Naturally, a '486 or Pentium would provide faster performance. Platinum for Windows operates under Novell NetWare or Windows NT network environments. For smaller installations not needing Pervasive SQL, Application Servers can be defined to run on the Windows NT Server as virtual applications and would not require separate physical machines. The system configuration minimizes cost while maximizing flexibility and performance.
