Evron: 26 Years In Business

On February 7th, Evron celebrated its 26th Anniversary.

It certainly has been an interesting 26 years. We have weathered three recessions and we are now in our fourth. We have seen about four generations of competitors come and go and have witnessed some amazing advances in technology over the years.

Some things, however, have remained the same. These things are why we're able to be here to send this newsletter and why I think we will be able to send the equivalent 26 years from now.

Evron has always had three core strategies that we believe are both powerful and timeless.

The first is that we have always focused on being a single point of responsibility for our clients. This end-to-end concept has always meant that we seek to take on responsibility for our clients and to engage them as broadly as possible. Further, this means we deal with the software application and the hardware infrastructure where the software runs. Although the technologies have changed dramatically, the concept remains the same.

The second strategy has been to focus on the solution. It has never been about the product or the price, nor is it now. We seek to understand the problems and the cost of those problems. We then come up with the solutions that solve these problems. Serving our client base for 26 years provides some interesting perspective and re-affirmations.

These include situations where a prospect becomes a valued client after finding out what initially appeared to be a cheaper alternative turned out to be an expensive failure years after our initial unsuccessful presentation.

The third strategy is one of partnership, for we develop and maintain long-term partnerships. We choose a first-tier vendor partner and stay with them. Relationships with companies such as Sage, Epicor, Microsoft, IBM, Symantec and Citrix go back ten to fifteen years, if not more. The same applies to clients -- some of which go back to our first year in business. The same is true for our staff. We have 42 members on our team and continue to grow. We have people who have joined in the last couple of years but with low turnover many have been here more than ten years and some going back to our first few years. This experience has allowed us to avoid major mistakes and to provide continuity of service for our clients.

In our market, the future is bright and exciting. For our BusinessVision, PFW and Epicor clients, we are rolling out exciting upgrades and add-on technologies to greatly enhance the software investments made. Infrastructure opportunities that help our clients prosper continue to multiply. The conversations about virtualization, remote access, security, and managed services have led to solutions that help our clients reduce costs, increase sales and enhance employee productivity.

I am particularly excited about the opportunities associated with Unified Communications/VoIP systems. Essentially, we are talking about computers that look like telephones for which we can develop software. We have already written first generation applications where we have linked the "phone system" to the BusinessVision accounting software. Capabilities such as being able to look up a phone number from the customer master file, or seeing the customer profile on your telephone screen when a customer calls, or automating the collections calls that look into receivable files are only the beginning.

Thank you for the last 26 years. We are looking forward to the next 26 years together.

SBS 2008: Making The Most of Your Investment

The Benefits of Microsoft's SBS 2008 Server Platform

One of the smartest investments you as a small business owner can make nowadays is using technology to your competitive advantage. You're probably wondering: do I need to invest in a company server? If so, is the price point right for me?

So let's say you're looking to invest in a new server platform or simply upgrade to something new and more powerful. There are a broad number of considerations to take place here: cost, capabilities and how best the server technology will enhance corporate productivity.

We believe, here at Evron, that there's an excellent option for you with Windows Small Business Server 2008 (SBS 2008).

SBS 2008 is more than just a standard server solution. It's an "all-in-one" platform that helps you keep your data more secure, your company productive and gives you tools to present a more professional image to customers.

SBS 2008 provides highly secure access to business contacts, calendars, e-mail, files and other important desktop resources from any Internet-connected computer. Virtually anywhere at any time you can be productive while you're away from the office or on the road.

Of course, it's important to state the value proposition with upgrading to SBS 2008. You want to make sure this investment is going to be worth your time and money.

We think there are a number of reasons to upgrade and to take things to the next level for your business.

SBS 2008 is impressive because it has vastly improved support for line-of-business applications for your CRM (customer relationship marketing), accounting, or manufacturing database software.

It also has an updated, easier-to-use management console that's now organized by business tasks, as well as a streamlined set-up and deployment strategy to reduce the cost of deploying and maintaining your network. The SBS also has improved internal company web site capabilities for better list management, plus wikis and blogs.

Naturally, security plays an important role in all this kind of investment, since productivity alone can't justify a purchase like this. SBS 2008 has anti-spam protection and disaster recovery capabilities for computers, server backups and recovery. It also has redesigned monitoring and reporting features and even anti-virus status and monitoring.

One of the most compelling reasons, however, for SBS 2008 has to do with the fact the technology behind the platform is modern, up-to-date and capable of doing all the tasks that your increasingly mobile workforce needs. The SBS platform syncs business contacts, calendars, e-mail, files and anything else relevant to your business with the office network, even while you're out on the road.

We think that this platform is a positive step forward for our clients and prospect base. For more information, call and see how SBS 2008 can work for you.

Budget 2009: What It Means For You

In an effort to jump start the Canadian economy, the government has put forth several opportunities from which small business can derive benefits.

By far the best and the easiest to claim is the 100 per cent Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) rate for investments in eligible computers and software. This 100 per cent CCA rate is not subject to the dreaded "half year rule."

Sounds great, but what does it means and how can you benefit from it?

There is an interesting tax benefit when leasing. If you purchase qualified software, services and/or computers, you can lease them on a capital lease (A lease where you show the purchased item as an asset and the lease as a liability on your balance sheet). You can write off the entire cost on your next corporate tax return. In reality, you may have paid as little as one payment on the lease, and you can immediately write off three years of future payments.

Example: On a three year $30,000 lease, your payment would be approximately $936 per month. Assuming that you buy the software and services in March and you have a June 30th year end, the following applies:

* Outlay: $936 x 3 = $2,808 - before year end

* Tax savings (on the software purchase): $30,000 x 17% (assumed small business tax rate) = $5,100 immediately.

Of course, by the end of the lease, you have made all the payments and the tax benefits will all even out. However, that is three years from now, when these troubled times will only be a memory. The point is that you can pay out the lease over three years, enjoy the efficiencies and benefits that the software brings to your enterprise, and get three years of tax benefit immediately.

This is truly an advantage that directly helps and is available to all small businesses.
